News from the Convention:

White Camel Awards to be presented at the Open Source Cajun Soiree on Monday, August 23, at 6:00p.m. The first White Camel Awards will be presented to "unsung heroes" of the Perl community at the Open Source Cajun Soiree in the Custom House Plaza Tent. The Awards will be presented to three individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Perl Advocacy, Perl User Groups, and the Perl Community. Each award comes with a cash prize of $3000.

The White Camel Awards were created by Perl Mongers, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to establish Perl user groups. The awards are sponsored by Perl Mongers, O'Reilly & Associates, and i sourceXchange, a web-based marketplace for Open Source development.

The rare white camel, prized by desert-dwellers, is the inspiration for the White Camel Awards. The camel has come to symbolize Perl since it first appeared on the cover of O'Reilly & Associates' classic Programming Perl in 1991.
