MySQL: An Ecosystem, Not Just a Company: O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo Brings MySQL Community Together

Sebastopol, CA, May 18, 2010—The O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo brought together database and open source stakeholders from around the world to explore the future of MySQL April 12-15, 2010 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. The conference program and expo floor illustrated the rich developer, technology, and partner communities that make up the MySQL ecosystem. This event, produced by O'Reilly Media, built on the tradition of past MySQL conferences, previously co-presented with MySQL AB and with Sun.

Despite the uncertainty about MySQL's future, conference participants recognized that this is also a time of opportunity. The conference program highlighted the latest and best knowledge on MySQL and related technologies to a global community of DBAs, developers, and managers. Topics covered included: Cloud Computing, Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, Java, Migration, Performance Tuning and Benchmarking, Ruby, Security, Optimization, and emerging technologies such as NoSQL, among others.

Edward Screven, Oracle's Chief Architect, was one of the most anticipated speakers of the conference. Other featured speakers included Brian Aker, Data Differential; Slava Akhmechet, RethinkDB; Kaj Arnö, Sun Microsystems GmbH; Jono Bacon, Canonical Ltd; Mark Callaghan, Facebook; Sheeri K. Cabral, The Pythian Group; Tim O'Reilly, O'Reilly Media; and Michael Widenius, Monty Program Ab.

Another indication of the flourishing MySQL ecosystem: sponsors made a number of important announcements at the conference. Oracle announced the release of MySQL Cluster 7.1 and beta of MySQL 5.5; Percona launched 'Percona Server with XtraDB'; Gear6 Memcached now scales both SQL and NoSQL applications; Schooner Information Technology released next-generation turnkey data-access appliances; Zmanda provides cloud backup and disaster recovery for large-scale MySQL installations; Gear6 Memcached now supported on Ubuntu Server Editions; Pentaho shows off agile BI; and Familybuilder readies for explosive growth with CodeFutures.

Sponsors of the O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo included Oracle, Monty Program, Calpont, Facebook, Gear6, Infobright, JasperSoft, Joyent, Kickfire, NorthScale, Percona, Schooner Information Technology, Solid Quality Mentors, Zmanda, Intel, and Pentaho.
