YouTube, Flickr, and Wikipedia to Share their Secrets of Success at the 2007 MySQL Conference & Expo

Extensive Program Illustrates MySQL's Position in Today's Interactive Online Culture

Sebastopol, CA -- The 2007 MySQL Conference & Expo is gearing up for April 23-26 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California. This year's program includes more than 110 tutorials and sessions to be delivered by some of the most successful companies and fast growing web sites in today's Internet economy -- including YouTube, Flickr, and Wikipedia, whose participation underscores the influence of MySQL's open source database. According to Tim O'Reilly, CEO and founder of O'Reilly Media, Inc., "Every killer app on the Internet is a database application. And that makes MySQL the 'Intel Inside' of the next-generation of computer applications."

Among the high-profile success stories at the conference will be:

Scaling MySQL at YouTube -- Paul Tuckfield, YouTube
YouTube has experienced explosive growth continuously for most of its history. This talk will focus on a series of unfortunate events, each followed by a fortunate solution, in the battle to keep scaling YouTube databases as fast as YouTube users demand.

Federation at Flickr: Doing Billions of Queries Per Day -- Dathan Pattishall, flickr.com
This talk is a broad look into the uses of MySQL at Flickr, and how Flickr attains such great performance from very few instances of MySQL. Data layout, distributed transactions, and more will be presented in a use-case situation so attendees can see how naturally redundant, fast, and scalable the MySQL backend at Flickr is achieved.

Wikipedia: Site Internals, Configuration and Code Examples, and Management Issues --
Domas Mituzas, MySQL and Wikimedia Foundation
Wikipedia is not only one of most popular web sites, it is also one of the most open. This also applies to its technology -- everything uses open source, free software, and there are no trade secrets. This allows disclosure of most of Wikipedia's internal technology including its content delivery network, application tricks, and database environment.

In addition, keynote presenter Eben Moglen, director of the Software Freedom Law Center, will deliver "Freedom Businesses Protect Privacy," examining how "Free as in Freedom" businesses help prevent the ultimate privacy catastrophe. Eben elaborates on this concept by stating that, among other ideas, "Privacy is an ecological value, like climate stability: all our actions affect it overall."

Conference keynotes will also be presented by Silicon Valley icon Guy Kawasaki, MySQL AB CEO Marten Mickos, Red Hat, HP -- and a "Clash of the Database Egos" featuring some of the industry's leading database architects and visionaries.

Co-produced by O'Reilly Media and MySQL AB, the 2007 MySQL Conference & Expo is the largest event of its kind. Bringing together over 2,000 MySQL developers, users, and DBAs from all over the world, this event will offer a broad look at MySQL's wide-ranging appeal and capabilities. The friendly, personal atmosphere encourages users to share information on creating custom database applications, tools, and software plus expert instruction, hands-on tutorials, and real-world business advice.
