Jay Yao III is a Canadian-Asian photographer living in New York. In his earlier days he learned most of his technique by reading books and magazines. He then formalized his education at Hampshire College, where he studied design and typography and graduated after presenting a photo thesis examining Canadian-Asian identity.

When I look at Jay's work, I see models who are comfortable with the man behind the camera. In part this is because Jay believes it's as important to communicate verbally as it is through imagery.

He also pays great attention to detail. He does his own location scouting and works closely with the makeup and hair artist. In the end, his goal is to create compositions that not only are pleasing to the eye, but also move beyond the strictly visual to make an emotional connection.
