"So the 4th edition of Learning Java, by Patrick Niemeyer Et. Al is a book that I wouldn't recommend for novice, and especially me, having not touched Java since my Bachelor's degree, I had to do a lot of researching in various areas, this book covers quite a broad spectrum of Java, and is used quite well as a reference book, from Swing and various Graphics APIs to Web Sockets. "Very good first section on setting up the development environment. The part on the language is good as a reference, but it does not seem like something for teaching someone how to get things done or learning programming." Full Review >

"This book is most suited to those who know some Java but want to progress their knowledge to its broader use or those moving to Java from another language. I don't think it's a good book for new programmers. " Full Review >
-- Grant van Staden,

"This is a pretty decent book. I'm new to Java but have an extensive development background. I appreciated the exercises and examples. The only thing I really struggled with was Eclipse. I haven't used Eclipse in the past and so there was a steep learning curve for me. I think this is a great book to get a decent understanding of the basics of Java. I will need a different book as a guide as I dive deeper into Java." Full Review >
-- Thom Allen,

"Now in it's fourth edition, Learning Java is an introduction to the Java language in just over a thousand pages." Full Review >
