Materials Needed
- One computer with email/Web access;
- Database or spreadsheet software (optional)
Procedure
For Older Students
- Have students research dominent and recessive gene traits and create
a survey to test the traits on a large sample. Include questions about
at least 3 dominent and 3 recessive genes in your survey.
- Conduct an email survey of other students across the U.S. by posting
the survey for other classrooms (offer to share all data with respondees).
- Once the results are in, help students design a database (either manually
or online using spreadsheet software) and compile data.
- Have students analyze data.
- Present data in class using graphs, bar charts, and pie charts.
For Younger Students
- Elementary students can modify this activity by surveying students
on a fun genetic trait such as the ability to curl your tongue.
