Section 11.5.2, point 8

Phone, not email

Point 18 third para reads:
"If you look at the document window now, you see that the email field has a red etc"

Point 18 third para should read:
"If you look at the document window now, you see that the phone field has a red etc"

Paolo Miggiano
Printed Page 5
Paragraph 4

"...whether HTML or XHTML is the best (sic) approach."
Use "better" when the choice is between two alternatives.

Peter Ronai, MD
Printed Page 5
Third paragraph

"Part 5, Appendixes...The last two appendices..."
Consistency required. Use either Anglicized form, "appendixes," or Latin form, "appendices."

Peter Ronai, MD
Printed Page 7
Note: (paragraph 2)

"Even more importantly (sic), you'll learn about...."

"Importantly" is not an adverb modifying "learn." It is, in fact, an adjective; the beginning phrase of this sentence actually means, "And what is even more important...."

The correct version is therefore, "Even more important, you'll learn about...."

Peter Ronai, MD
Printed Page 10
line 3

"...(like 2 and 3-column layouts)..."
Should be, "(like 2- and 3-column layouts)"

Peter Ronai, MD

5th paragraph, line 4

"quotes" should read "quotation marks." (A quote is the text between the quotation marks.)

Dr_Pete

Second paragraph

..."words or phrases that appear inside of (sic) a larger paragraph or heading."
The "of" is superfluous.

Peter Ronai, MD

UP TO SPEED, First paragraph

"More importantly, you can't create..."
See previous post on this error (should be "more important" as it is a contraction of "What is more important...."

Peter Ronai, MD

Figure 1-4 caption

"Use the headline tags...like (sic) you would if..."
"Like" is a preposition, not a conjunction. The correct wording is, "Use the headline tags...as you would if...."

Last Paragraph

"...use the <div> and <span> tags (see page 18)."
Should be (...see page 20)."

Peter Ronai, MD

Fifth paragraph

"...make their software behave like (sic) browsers did circa 1999..."
Again, "like" is a preposition, not a conjunction.
Correct wording is, "...make their software behave the way browsers did circa 1999...."

Paragraph 5 •Value

"...an URL..."
"An" (as opposed to "a") works only if "URL" were pronounced "earl"; I know of no one who pronounces it this way.

Peter Ronai, MD

See my previous comment about "an URL."
Also, in reference to first paragraph after "Linking a Style Sheet Using CSS": see my previous comment about "inside of."

First line after "Creating an Inline Style"

"...(just like the ones on page 27)..."
Should be page 28.

Peter Ronai, MD
Printed Page 36
Fifth line

"...enclose all of the CSS code inside quotes (sic)."
Should be: ""...enclose all of the CSS code inside quotation marks."
Quotes are what go inside quotation marks.

"Terms Worth Knowing About" column 2 line 2

"The remote, or live, site is a mirror image of the local site" should read "The remote, or live, site is a duplicate of the local site." If it were a mirror image, everything would be reversed.

6. On the Dreamweaver Welcome screen...

Can't access the Welcome screen while a file is open (as is the case when the reader gets to step 6). The file has to be closed out to access the Welcome screen.

Another example of "inside of" ("of" is redundant).
More examples on pp. 71 (second paragraph and Note:) and 76 (line 23).

"...it covers the brief nanosecond..."
As opposed to the long nanosecond?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION, line 4

"...where child selectors can't be beat (sic)."
I know this is a colloquial form, but the correct grammar is "can't be beaten." Best to avoid this form altogether, and substitute "are unbeatable," or similar.

Step 21

"stsyle" should read "style"

Anonymous

last paragraph, line 1

After closing the New CSS Rule window, the "CSS Rule definition" window appears.

Dangling participle: "closing" is dangling, because it does not refer to the doer. The "CSS Rule definition" is not what does the closing. The reader does the closing. The grammatically correct version is, After closing the New CSS Rule window, you will see the "CSS Rule definition" window....OR,
After you close the New CSS Rule window, you will see the "CSS Rule definition" window...

"Chia Vet heaquarters (sic)"

should read:
"3. Keep right at the fork and follow the signs to Morrison St/City Center"

"5. Keep right onto the rampt (sic) to Salem/I-T S (sic)"
should read:
"5. Keep right onto the ramp to Salem/I-5"

2nd paragraph, line 2

"...much like an outline has headings..."

"Like" is a preposition, not a conjunction. The grammatically correct version is:
"...much as an outline has headings..."

Dr_Pete

First paragraph, line 8

"These days, however, Dreamweaver's table feature is a much more superior method..."
This is one for the Department of Redundancy Department: "more superior"
is a double comparative. Correct version:
"These days, however, Dreamweaver's table feature is a much superior method..."

First Note, line 6

"See page 75 for more on the <br> tag and how to get rid of these pesky critters"

In the Figure 4-22 screenshot, the Color should be #F93 for Top and Bottom, not #FF9933. This change will make the screenshot agree with the text in step 6 above.

All

Pages 155 through 202 are completely missing from the book. They have not been torn out our cut out. It appears as though the book was bound without those pages.

"...and the logo still has a big blue outline around it."
and
"First you'll remove the clunky blue border from around the logo image."

On my computer (G5 running Mac OS 10.4.11) the logo doesn't have a blue line around it.

Dr_Pete

Step 1

Another minor suggestion: in Step 1, you say "...click right below the Chia Vet logo..." To Windows users, click right means to click the right button (which opens a long menu). I suggest deleting the word "right" so that it reads "...click below the Chia Vet logo, inside the grassy background image..."

Hi, In prder to vertically align ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul.li with ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul (at margin-left 15px)I had to use margin-left -15px and not 0px. Logically, this seems to make sense in order to align or is it my mistake. Thanks - by the way - BRILLIANT book.

In step 7, selecting white from the color box is written twice. Delete the second sentence: "From the Color box select white."

James Welch

2nd Paragraph

second sentence reads... "The copyright notice item"... I believe that the example is using something that would better be referred to as "The recent Chia VEt announcements item"...

step 11

I had been using the context menu (via right click) instead of the insert menu up until this point in the tutorial. When I tried to do this with the "Optional Region" it worked incorrectly every time - the optional region ended up being created AT THE POINT I CLICKED THE MOUSE instead of for the current selection (the Div). Only when I clicked on the thick blue line surrounding the selection did it function as it is supposed to.

Now, I know that the step-by-step in the book doesn't do it this way but in a book called "missing manual" I'd hope to see a warning about this somewhere in the instructions.

final results

I went through the tutorial from 901-904 to create a repeat region of category names and kept getting a parse error when I showed Live Data. I backed-out 3 times and re-did the steps and kept getting the same error. I finally opened Category.php to see the code there. It was different. It statered the <ul> with
<?php do { ?> which i ended up copying and pasting in my index.php. I also had an extra a 'href' line that would show up highlighted in yellow in my code. So I had to delete that too.
It just didn't seem to work using the steps in the book.
