Step 7

When I double-clicked on the dekeKeys keyboard shortcuts folder instread of Photoshop CS4 springing to the front my Premeire Elements program came forward. I could not get Photoshop CS4 to recognize the folder and keyboard shortcuts.
Do I need a replacement copy of the dekeKeys folder?

Last Paragraph

Hello.I cannot seem to change the keyboard shortcuts. I just purchased the Latest iMac and it's keyboard has the fast forward and volume controls mapped onto the F7-F12 keys.

Step 4 (Copy the color settings to your hard drive); step 7 (install DekeKeys)

Two minor suggestions in step 4 and one for step 7:

1) It's probably worth pointing out that this step is common across the one-on-one series of books, and Adobe uses the same color settings file across the CSx product line...also, some people may be surprised by unexpectedly finding the color setting file already there if they're starting on their second Deke book.

2) For Windows (XP and Vista) the token shown as "user" in the directory path is *usually* your login name but this isn't always the case. A quick cheat when entering the path in the RUN dialog box is to use "%userprofile%" (without the quotes) as a substitute for everything up to and including the word "user" as shown in the text.

Also, in step 7: suggest that you call attention to the ability to generate an el cheapo Web page with all of the shortcuts. The "Summarize" button in the shortcuts dialog box does stare the user in the face, but it doesn't really call attention to itself. (With a little TLC you can even copy-and-paste from the browser display to a spreadsheet and format the result as desired to create a custom cheat sheet.)

Step 2.

Exercise refers to six photos in the "Balloon Thief" folder for Lesson 01 on the DVD; however, only one photo is included in that folder.

First sentence (top of page), DICOM...

References CS3 Extended Edition, whereas book is CS4.

There may be a further issue: as I read it, Deke states the DICOM metatag fields are only in the Expanded Edition. My CS4 is a stand-alone version, not the Suite or Expanded Edition -- and this stand-alone version has the DICOM fields.

All very minor but in the interest of those who are new to Photoshop... great book even though I've been a Photoshop user and NAPP member for more than ten years.

Figure 1-28

My Windows Vista copy of the stand-alone CS4 (not the Suite or Extended Edition) shows 4 metatags within a category heading Mobile SWF. My guess: Adobe added the category after the book went to press, as there is no written text mentioning Mobile SWF.

Additionally, in the program setup (page xx, last paragraph) it is recommended that the user turn off Version Cue. But in Figure 1-28 the Version Cue metatag category heading is checked; should it be "unchecked"?

1st paragraph, 3rd line

"DICOM appears only with those versions of the Creative Suite that include the more expensive Photoshop CS3 Extended."

Should read Photoshop CS4 Extended.

Fields selected in text do not exactly match fig 1-29

Camera Data (EXIF) - Text says to turn on Orientation, Make, and Model. Fig 1-29 shows these on plus Focal Length, Max Aperture, Flash, Metering Mode, and File Source.

Last sentence in "Further Investigation"

In the gentle hint that one should look at your online Photoshop training, you suggest that readers "get started with your 7-day Free Trail Account". Lessee now...is that Mark Trail? Or the Free Trail of the Century?

Bottom of Descriptions List

In Descriptions List of the pop quiz, "12." should actually be "L."

The last question is noted as "12" rather than "L"

Pearl of Wisdom

The Pearl comments on the option bar contents when the ruler tool is used, referring to the angle (A) and distance (D1) fields. That was correct for Photoshop CS2 but in CS4 (and maybe CS3; I never used that version) the label is now L1. (Also: I'm using Windows and don't know what label the MacOS version uses.) The text also makes no mention of the (unpopulated) L2 field.

Item 17

The book says to go inside the pattern fill dialog box... this is not the pattern needed. In CS4, one must go to patterns in a submenu to find the Metal Landscape pattern

Paragraph No. 2 headed 'Survey the Channels'

While referring to the image file, Match girl.tif on the book's CD ROM, Mr McClelland says in parenthesis: '(For the moment, ignore the three alpha channels, Soft blob, Flame and Final Mask.)'

In fact the only channels that appear in the Photoshop CS4 for Windows Channels Palette are RGB, Red, Green and Blue. The Soft blob, Flame and Final Mask alpha channels are missing.

Please could this image file including all the channels be made available so that Lesson 7 can be completed?

Thank you for your help.

Second Paragraph headed 'Survey the Color Channels'

The problem I reported regarding the missing alpha channels in the file, 'Matchgirl.tiff' was not an error. The alpha channels are present in the file when it is opened directly into Photoshop CS4.

Opening the file in Camera Raw before bringing it into Photoshop CS4 will cause the alpha channels to disappear.
