My preferred way of using this book is to have it open next to the keyboard of my PC so that I can enter/check examples on the PC. The book is so thick that keeping the page open at the right place is difficult. It would be useful if the book was also published in loose leaf form, e.g. spiral bound or in a 2 or 4 ring binder.

2nd paragraph

The price data for the doll is shown as $7.99. That will work fine (I.e. the price field will be correctly set to 'currency') if the reader's PC is set up with dollars as the default currency but if (for example) the currency is GBP, the field will default to 'text'. It may be worth adding a note saying that the currency sign used (i.e. $, ?, etc) should correspond to the default currency on the reader's PC.

The link mentioned in the FAQ box (http://tinyurl.com/2g8db77) for downloading SharePoint Foundataion 2010 is invalid.

The tinyurl link in the SharePoint Foundation 2010 bullet point of the FAQ goes to an invalid link page @ Microsoft. It needs to point to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24983. This link address is to the SP2 version of SharePoint Foundation 2010 so it is also the most up to date version of that product (and still free of course,)

1st paragrpah

The ctrl+" ctrl+; and the ctrl+Alt+Space don't work all the time.

For example: I tied the ctrl+" to copy the value from he field that's immediately above the current field. Then when I move one field to the right to do the same, it does not work. As soon as I press the keys it goes to the next record. Also when I tried to enter today's date it does not work either. Seems that you can do only one
operation in a given record.

I know that this may be more a problem with Access, but it should be clarify on your book.

End of 1st paragraph

Further to my previous request, I have now found the clarification I wanted. It's 2 pages later on page 127 (which is near enough). It was unfortunate that I just happened to break off from reading the book on page 125 !!

End of 1st paragraph

I noted the last part of the Tip on page 124 (i.e. someone might want to add Employee records even though they don?t yet have their SSN). You then state at the top of page 125 that if I?ve indexed SSN, Access won?t let me insert a record with a duplicate SSN. Having just been given the idea on the previous page of creating records with missing (null?) SSNs, what was missing for me on page 125 was a clarification whether or not two records both with a missing SSN constitute a ?duplicate? (null = null) in this context. Would they be allowed or not?
Excellent manual. Many people write ambiguously without realising it. So far I have been struck by the absence of ambiguous writing in this book.

Text in Figure 21-8

This also covers the whole of the 'Creating a SQL Server Database' section on pages 697 to 707.

I have two user ids on my PC; Admin with admin privileges and Everyday without admin privileges.

I downloaded SQL Server Express using my Everyday user id. When I came to follow the steps for upsizing a database (pages 697 to 703) and creating a SQL server database from scratch (pages 706 to 707) the steps failed using the Everyday user id but worked using the Admin user id. The Upsizing Wizard Report gave an error for each table stating 'Table was skipped, or export failed'.

So what brought this about?
- Did I miss a step in downloading SQL Server Express?
- Is the statement in Figure 21-8 'SQL Server automatically assumes that you, the current user, should be an administartor' incorrect?
- Should some further explanation/steps be added to the text?

I appreciate that this a book about Access, but this matter is pretty fundamental.
