Error 1 Page 24:
Under the section titled "Changing How Far Back You Can Go", step 1 states to click "Photoshop --> Preferences". There is no menu item named "Photoshop" to click on. It's actually "Edit --> Preferences".

Error 2 Page 20 & 23: This is not an error, just language use.
Page 20: under description of the Tools Panel, the 1st sentence reads "The most important panel in Photoshop is the one named Tools"

Then on page 24, under Layers, "The Layers panel is the single most important panel in Photoshop".

So which one is most important? Just kidding. Thought I'd bring that up. I'm a beginner user of PS and so far found your book to be awesome. Thanks for making it happen. Other books are too confusing for a novice like myself.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Page 23, under "Layers" subhead, change 1st sentence from "The Layers panel is the single most important panel in Photoshop." to read "The Layers panel is home to the single most important concept in Photoshop."

Page 24, under "Changing How Far Back..." subhead, under numeral 1, change 2nd to last sentence from "On a PC, choosing Photoshop > Preferences..." this should read: "On a PC, choosing Edit > Preferences..."

"click the red dot to..." (to shrink the window down onto the dock)
red dot closes the window, yellow one shrinks it onto the dock, I think, for Mac's

Note from the Author or Editor:
Tip, 2nd sentence, change "red dot" to "yellow dot"

Figure 1-4

Text and images don't correlate, e.g., reference to "bottom top right" is nonsense. Seems to require 4 images, but there are only 3.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Change figure 1-4 caption to read as follows:

"The many faces of Photoshop: Standard with Application Frame (top); Full Screen with Menu Bar (bottom left); Full Screen (bottom right). Of course, you can edit your images in any mode. Also, pressing the Tab key displays menus and panels if they happen to be hidden."

A line points to the "New Layer" button, but calls it the "New Group" button.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Move the "New group" figure label over one icon to the left so it points to the folder icon, not the new layer icon.

Figure 3-31

If you move the right portion of the figure below the left portion, it can be enlarged. Big waste of white space.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Please have production move the right hand portion of the figure below the left hand portion, that way we're not wasting white space and the caption column doesn't have to be so thin. In doing so, the figure caption also needs to reference "Bottom" instead of "Right"

Figure 3-33

Move right hand portion of figure below the left hand portion. Huge waste of white space.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Move right hand portion of figure below the left hand portion. Huge waste of white space and figure label touches graphic (bad). This means the caption column doesn't have to be so thin. Also, the figure label in the caption is actually correct, as it references "bottom".

Lab Channels>a.

Channel a contains magenta and green information, rather than red and green information.

Reference: "Photoshop LAB Color" by Dan Margulis, which is the text I use and recommend to my students at The Cooper Union. I consider it the Lab Bible.

Thank you for sending this inspection copy of "The Missing Manual, Photoshop CS4". It arrived moments ago and by chance opened to this page. I have not read the book yet but am looking forward to it. Probably just my luck to notice the only inconsistency in the manual.

--Prof. Norman Sanders

Note from the Author or Editor:

Creating an Alpha Channel; please refer to 1st paragraph

Pg 186 (Creating an Alpha Channel)
.......the black parts of the channel indicate the unselected part of your image-also referred to as the protected or masked part-and the selection itself is white (........................

However, if you refer to page 187, Figure 5-6 shows the selection (i.e., the hat) as black!

Shouldn't the selection (i.e., the hat) be white (because you haven't reverse the colors yet)?

Note from the Author or Editor:

The top line of text is in standard Adios Script Pro (a truly gorgeous OpenType font). The middle line was created using Contextual Alternates, which summons alternate letter designs depending upon where the letter falls within a word. The last line was created using the extra-flourishy Swash option. Whee!
