Paragraph II (2)

Deke instructs readers to install additional typefaces bundled with CS4 but not installed by default. Unfortunately four of these fonts, the Bernhard family, were removed from CS4 by Adobe (they were in CS3). The knock-on effect is that several of the exercise page layouts use Bernhard and so this typeface is replaced with a default type (looks like Helvetica). This obviously dramatically changes the appearance of Deke's exercise projects. To buy the missing fonts from Adobe costs ?79.

Note from the Author or Editor:
Unfortunately, these fonts were originally to be included by Adobe, but were pulled during the development process. Deke and I have made new, Bernhard-free documents available at http://www.deke.com/content/bernhard-free-documents on Deke's blog. Please note that these require a manual install of the Nueva Std fonts, instead of the Bernhard Modern, as discussed on page xx of the preface in Step 11.

As you mentioned, if you have InDesign CS3 or the CS3 Suite, you do not need these updated files, but if you are new to InDesign with CS4, these files will address the issue.
