GMAIL OFFERS POP3 ACCESS

Unlike other free email services, Gmail offers free POP3 access, so you can check
your Gmail using any third party email program. POP3 access isn't turned on
automatically, so you'll have to do a little bit of work to turn it on and configure
it.

In Gmail, click Settings and then click the "Forwarding and POP" link at the top of
the page. If you want your email client to retrieve all the email you.ve ever
received on Gmail, choose "Enable POP for all mail." But don't make this choice
casually. Remember, Gmail gives you up to 1GB of storage, so if you.ve received a lot
of mail, you could end up downloading hundreds of megabytes of mail the first time
you connect with your POP3 email program.

If you instead choose "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on," only those
messages you receive after this point will be downloaded to your email client. That's
a much safer--and saner--choice.

Next, dictate what should happen to your Gmail messages. Should they be kept on the
Gmail server, and if they are, should they be kept in the Inbox or in the Archived
mail? You can keep all new mail on the Gmail server, archive Gmail.s copy, or trash
Gmail.s copy.

When you're done making your selections, click Save Changes.

Now you'll have to tell your email program how to work with Gmail. The steps are
similar for accessing any webmail account via a POP3 program. For details on
configuring GMail, click "Configuration instructions" on the Forwarding and POP Gmail
screen for details.
