Our look is the result of reader comments, our own experimentation, and feedback from distribution channels. Distinctive covers complement our distinctive approach to technical topics, breathing personality and life into potentially dry subjects. The animal appearing on the cover of Jini in a Nutshell is a lar gibbon (Hylobates lar). Of the nine species of gibbon, the lar is the smallest. Gibbons inhabit the tropical rain forests of southern Asia, specifically Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Gibbons range in color from brown to black. The lar gibbon is characteristically marked with white hands, feet, and face rings. Color is not specific to gender; males or females can show either color, but their white markings are always present. A male and female typically join in a monogamous relationship that consists of the mated pair and their offspring. The mated pair tends to stay together in the same territory and continue to reproduce as the mature offspring leave the group. Colleen Gorman was the production editor and proofreader for Jini in a Nutshell; Maureen Dempsey, Mary Anne Weeks Mayo, and Jane Ellin provided quality control, and Nancy Kotary and Jane Ellin copyedited the book. Emily Quill and Ann Schirmer provided production assistance. Lenny Muellner provided SGML support. Ellen Troutman-Zaig wrote the index.
Edie Freedman designed the cover of this book, using an original illustration created by Lorrie LeJeune. Kathleen Wilson produced the cover layout with Quark XPress 3.3 using Adobe's ITC Garamond font. Whenever possible, our books use RepKover, a durable and flexible lay-flat binding. If the page count exceeds RepKover's limit, perfect binding is used.
The interior layouts were designed by Edie Freedman and Nancy Priest, with modifications by Alicia Cech, and implemented in gtroff by Lenny Muellner. Interior fonts are Adobe ITC Garamond and Adobe ITC Franklin Gothic. The illustrations that appear in the book were produced by Robert Romano and Rhon Porter using Macromedia FreeHand 8 and Adobe Photoshop 5. This colophon was written by Maureen Dempsey.
