Using Samba Review, January 01 2001
I was waiting for a good book on Samba after having read articles that help
to configure. One article used to cover at the most 4 to 5 aspects of using
Samba.
We used to understand upto 40% what we were doing. It was only after downloading the full htmldocs which also has this book in html format I understood what is supposed to be done and WHY ? It also strenthens the concepts of networking in general.
Thanks a lot

My eyes have seen the glory of a wonderfully integrated heterogeneous network thanks to a wonderful product called Samba.
O'Reilly can do no better than this book.

I set up a three PC network using SAMBA the same day as I bought the book - if that's not a good sign I don't know what is . Good one .

This is the book that I had been looking for but didn't realise it.
Amid the hype I somehow missed out on the vital piece of information that the reason I was looking to use Linux was actually to use Samba...
Anyway, this book took a Linux newbie, admittedly an MCSE, through the process of turning out a production quality Primary Domain Controller for Win9x and NT clients, and providing these clients with a rock solid file server, print server and WINS server.
You will need a few days to work through the book but this has already become a standard reference for me alongside Mark Minasi's "Mastering NT Server".
This is the book that any NT professional really needs if they want to get a running start on using Linux/Samba on their network.

The book does not cover any topic in detail so
that a person new to the networking field could understand it .
It would be better if the book could be made more wholesome by adding more diagrams and
deep discussion of network basics required in samba for the person new to the netwoking field.

Lucky me! I'd have bought the book had I not downloaded the pdf version of the book. :-)

As usual, Oreilly books are just excellent!!
I've bought several Samba books, and "Using Samba" is the best of them.
It's detailed, clear, and full of information.
Now I can understand Samba much better and administer Samba server with ease.
I'll give a 10 rating out of 10.

"a superb volume."--Tony Williams, "So you?d like to build a database driven web site," amazon.com
"All in all, this is the book Samba users have been waiting for. It's also perfect for Windows users looking to install a cheap, robust, Linux server."-Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk
"This book is full of information for anyone wishing to use Samba as a file or print sharing mechanism. Invaluable as a technical resource for Samba, the book also gives great insight for novices into beginning networks and how they work together." --Wes Ritchey, The Internet Eye, Feb 2001
"Using Samba is a very well written guide book which covers everything from the most basic concepts of installing the file and print server to security issues to name resolution...Invaluable as a technical resource for Samba, the book also gives great insight for novices into beginning networks and how they work together." --Wes Ritchey, The Internet-Eye, Feb 2001
"Brilliant." --Richard Ibbotson, Sheffield Linux User's Group, Feb 2001
Using Samba "a wonderful book, but I've come to expect that from O'Reilly."-Tom Boyer, DGFocus, July 2000
"This is the book Samba users have been waiting for. It's also perfect for Windows users looking to install a cheap, robust, Linux server. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk
"a comprehensive guide to Samba administration whether you're playing on one note or a full three-octave range, this book will help you maintain an efficient and secure server." --Linux Central, March 2000
"The authors have a clear, clean style (as you'd expect from O'Reilly) and take a common-sense, practical approach to various issues such as security and configuration. The authors also focus on additional Samba utilities like smbclient and smbmount, which are useful for troubleshooting. The chapter on tweaking for performance is excellent. More books deserve chapters like this. The authors go through the various bottlenecks and demonstrate how modifying one parameter affects the others. (I suspect the general principles are applicable elsewhere.) The real gem of this book is chapter nine, the troubleshooting tree. If you're stuck with weird behavior and you have a deadline to meet, this chapter alone may be well worth the cover price...If you know you need Samba and want some help setting it up and configuring it, this is your book. If you're curious about what Samba can do for your network, flip through the first chapter and rest assured that this book will help you get things under control." --chromatic, slashdot.org, November 1999
