Full Description

This most complete parent guide available covers not only detailed and precise medical information about leukemia and the various treatment options, but also day-to-day practical advice on how to cope with procedures, hospitalization, family and friends, school, social and financial issues, communication, feelings, and, if therapy is not successful, the difficult issues of death and bereavement. Woven among the medical details and the practical advice are the voices of parents and children who have lived with leukemia and its treatments. As many parents have already found, advice from "veteran" parents can be a lifeline. Obtaining a basic understanding of topics such as medical terminology, how drugs work, common side effects of chemotherapy, and how to work more effectively with medical personnel can only improve the quality of life for the whole family suffering along with their leukemic child. Having parents describe their own emotional ups and downs, how they coped, and how they molded their family life around hospitalizations can be a tremendous comfort. Just knowing that there are other kids on chemotherapy who refuse to eat anything but tacos or who have frequent rages can make one feel less alone. Parents who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily life, and tools to be a strong advocate for their child.

Childhood Leukemia Review,  October 12 1999
Submitted by Marlene Sorota   [Respond | View]

Nancy's book has gotten me through the past 2 1/2 years of my daughter's treatment. When Samantha was diagnosed I really didn't have that much information to go on, until I found CHILDHOOD LEUKEMIA. I showed the book to my daughter's Oncologist, and he had his office staff order books to give out to newly diagnosed patients. My daughter is still in remission and finishes treatment 11/99.

"The best resource to help survive this new world [of a childhood cancer diagnosis] is knowledge. Although the book focuses on leukemia it contains information which will prove extremely helpful to parents and families coping with any type of childhood cancer....

"This most complete parent guide available covers not only detailed and precise medical information about leukemia and the various treatment options from chemotherapy to bone marrow transplantation, but also day-to-day practical advice including how to handle procedures, hospitalization, family and friends, school, social and financial issues, communication, feelings and, if therapy is not successful, the difficult issues of death and bereavement. The cumulative experience of so many families who have faced the entire spectrum of what can happen in caring for a child with leukemia, and the comprehensive bibliographies at the end of every chapter, make this such a unique and helpful resource....

"This book, however, is not only for parents. It will prove equally instructive for anyone, but particularly for all health care professionals involved in the treatment of children with cancer. The honest and candid opinions expressed by children being treated for cancer, their siblings and parents serve as a reminder of the continual need for the highest standards of competence and compassion in helping families manage the difficult, and sometimes overwhelming, physical, emotional, social, and financial burdens they face....

"We will strive for the universally 'truly cured child.' As described by Dr. Jan van Eys, a pioneer in childhood cancer treatment: 'Truly cured children are not just biologically cured, free of disease, but developmentally on a par with their peers and at ease with their experience of having had cancer.' Parents who read this book will have the opportunity to insure that, as much as possible, they can give their child the very best opportunity to be 'truly cured'."
