From the people who put an armadillo on the cover of a system administrator book comes this collection of the computer underground hieroglyphs called "smileys." Originally inserted into email messages to denote "said with a cynical smile":-), smileys now run rampant throughout the electronic mail culture.

Smileys Review, February 26 2004
The scope of this book is impressive.
It includes an incredible number of ASCII smileys.
It also provides some valuable perspective
as well as a very extensive dictionary
in which you can look up smileys.
I wanted this book for a long time before I got it.
I was not disappointed.
If you found this review,
likely you would enjoy this book
and very possibly even find it useful.
This book would be a fun present for any geek,
and, for that matter, for anyone who does email
or instant messaging
or most any other form of on-line communication.
However that said,
I think it's time for a second edition.

Smileys Review, August 12 2000
It's a good book, and a great comprehensive guide on how to express one thing usually difficult to express on the internet -- emotion.
Media reviews
"In the dry world of zeroes and ones, a small, bright spot in the distant gloom rises like a sunny smile-face. Yes, Virginia, the nerds have found a sense of humor. Out of the spam comes Smileys to add a dash of cleverness to tired old E-mail.. Admittedly slim, David Sanderson's book fits nicely in a laptop bag for easy chuckle-research. Or it can be parked next to the desktop for quick comic relief." --Dingbat, February 1999
"For a quick grin at an odd moment, this is a nice pocket book to carry around. :-) If you keep this book near your terminal, you could express many heretofore hidden feelings in your email. ;-) Then again, such things may be frowned upon at your company. :-( No matter, this is a fun book to have around." --Gregory M. Amov, News & Review, June 1993
