There's a typo in the ISBN on the back cover. The back cover shows the ISBN as 978-1-596-80639-2, but it should be 978-0-596-80639-2. The fourth digit should be a 0, not a 1. |

The text says "Just type the first letter of a program or folder name ... to highlight the item ...." I open the programs list and press one key and another, but no highlights appear. Perhaps I've misnderstood the procedure. The arrow keys work fine, so (keyboard person that I am) I'm happy. But curious. Note from the Author or Editor: |

This isn't really an erratum, it's a suggested addition to Chap. 1 of the missing CD-ROM. In addition to CSMenuLauncher, I suggest you add as a retro replacement of the Start Menu the free, open-source Classic Shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/). I recently discovered it and am grooving on it. Note from the Author or Editor: |

The book claims that shortcut combinations "must include Ctrl+Alt and another key." But actually Windows also accepts combinations Ctrl + Shift + another key and Alt + Shift + another key. Particularly the former can be useful since Shift is next to Ctrl. |

Currently I have 2 Windows XP PCs connected with a crossover cable. I am reading your book in preparation for installing Windows 7 on one of these PCs and noticed on page 753 in the Up To Speed box PC-to-PC Micronetworks you mentioned that "(You can't create a wired ad-hoc network anymore, using an Ethernet crossover cable - only wireless)". Partition Magic is no longer available from Symantec. Also, even if you have the program, it won't install under Win7. A more in depth discussion of partitioning your current drive would be appreciated. Note that tools such as the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows do not seem to want to finish booting on a Win7 notebook. |

"Nobody uses laptop docking stations anymore!" This is simply not true, I have supported the public sector ( both federal and local government agencies) and they do indeed use laptop docking stations and even port replicators. The people using them most often are Emergency responders who take their notbook with them, or scientist who do onsite inspections for evalutions or compliance. The good thing is they are less problematic than in previous versions on Windows. Bottom line: They exist and are still used. Note from the Author or Editor: |
