Mac OS X Tiger Server Administration is the best guide you'll find available for one of the most robust server platforms around. Though the book builds on the knowledge from O'Reilly's preceding book, "Mac OS X Panther Server Administration", it stands on it's own, going from basic setup to in-depth administration tasks.

Any serious OS X Server administrator should pick this up as there have been significant changes from OS X Server 10.3 to 10.4 and Apple's documentation leaves much to be desired. One of the most important changes is Tiger's inclusion of ACL's which add multiple levels of specific access to share points and their underlying folders and files.

The only drawback of this book is the lack of a hardcopy version for purchase. Because of code references, it's better to have something you can pull off the shelf and crack open. As cumbersome as it might be to do so, at least you can print out the PDF and put it in a binder.

Disappointing. The description talks about managing web servers, but the book doesn't even mention it.

Buy the Panther server administration book instead. It's by far the better book., December 19 2006

Even though the Panther server administration book is for an earlier version of the OS it's so much more useful and informative than the Tiger server book.

It's a great loss to the entire Macintosh community that Michael Bartosh is no longer with us especially considering how his Panther server administration book is easily the best book on OS X or OS X server that has ever been written. The Tiger server book is no where near as detailed as the Panther book so don't let the name fool you. If you get only one book then buy the Mac OS X Panther Server Administration book. If you really want to you can get this book as well but don't expect anywhere near the depth shown in the earlier book. It's especially unfortunate considering the lack of useful books on Mac OS X server but I can only hope that someone uses the Panther server book as an example of what all other OS X books should strive for.

EMU's Computer Science Department raided the "Buy Students Pizza" pop can fund to buy this manual. The "why" presented here is worth even more than than the "how-to" within. Several of my students will benefit greatly from this manual.

Bargained-for members of our IT division will also be able to read it. (Shhhhhhhhh! They don't have a pop can fund for such expenses.)
