If you start to gently push a stationary object, it won't move, as friction always opposes motion. But if you keep on pushing harder, you'll eventually manage to exert a larger horizontal force than the maximum possible frictional force, and the object will move.

Basically, the correction is to swap the positions of the "sword and stone", and the "stack of stones", in the text. The formatting (bold, italic, subscript etc.) needs to stay the same, so the correction shouldn't be made by copying and pasting from this website, but the words need to be swapped so that it reads:

Isn't V(sub)0^2 in the neighborhood of 20 x 6x10^12 or roughly 1.2x 10^14?
Wouldn't the square root of that be around 10^7 ?
Or looking at it another way if v(sub)0 is really 3x10^13
then wouldn't V(sub)0^2 be 9x10^26 ? This doesn't agree with the order of magnitude of 10^14 for V(sub)0^2 in the solution.
Note from the Author or Editor: On p728 in the 'Sharpen your pencil solution' part a. the final answer (double underlined) is given as 3 x 1013 m/s (1sd) (with a superscripted 13).
Unfortunately this one slipped through. The answer is incorrect, and it affects the answer to part b as well.
So...
The double underlined part of the answer to a. reads

(where the 13 is superscripted)
It should read
1 x 107 m/s (1sd)
(where the 7 is superscripted)
(Note that the x is a times sign, not the letter x)
The current answer to part b. should be deleted and replaced with:
This is very fast. It?s getting close to the speed of light (the largest speed a material body can have). There?s no way you can build up that kind of speed so rapidly.
