The tool on the cover of Halo 2 Hacks is a helmet. Helmets have been used to protect soldiers for thousands of years. Ancient Greeks wore helmets into battle, and the Middles Ages saw the helmet become an essential part of a soldier's uniform. Helmets were initially made out of leather and served as protection against swords and arrows. As helmets evolved, they were made almost entirely of iron and featured a number of functional and stylistic enhancements. The 20th century introduced steel helmets to help protect against the dangers of modern warfare, such as flying shrapnel. The best of today's helmets are generally made of lightweight and tough Kevlar.
