The animal on the cover of Building Wireless Community Networks, Second Edition is a Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, the only parrot native to the United States. These foot-long, multicolored birds, with their green bodies and yellow and orange heads and necks, were voracious eaters of fruit and grain seeds. This behavior led to their wholesale destruction as agricultural pests. Although they were once found all over the southeastern United States, the last known Carolina parakeet died in the Cincinnati Zoo on February 21, 1918. Philip Dangler was the production editor and copyeditor for Building Wireless Community Networks, Second Edition. Genevieve d'Entremont was the proofreader.
