Full Description

Perl programmers increasingly rely on the Web, online help, and other online information sources to solve technical problems. Version 3.0 of O'Reilly's Perl CD Bookshelf gives you convenient online access to your favorite books from your CD-ROM drive. We've updated this best selling product with the electronic versions of 7 popular Perl books. Included are the second edition of Perl in a Nutshell (paperback version included), the third editions of Learning Perl and Programming Perl, the Perl Cookbook, and 3 new titles: Perl & XML, Perl & LWP, and Mastering Perl/Tk. In addition to the reference material and tutorials in Programming Perl and Learning Perl, many of the most popular and useful applications for Perl are covered in these seven books. Many XML programmers are turning to Perl as a language for XML processing because of its text-processing features and the many powerful modules designed for XML development. LWP is the most downloaded Perl distribution in all of CPAN (Comprehensive Perl Archive Network). Perl/Tk is the most mature toolkit, has a wide community of experienced users, and is easy to use for building applications. Never has it been easier to learn, or look up, what you need to know online. Formatted in HTML, The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 3.0, can be accessed with any web browser. The books are fully searchable and cross-referenced. In addition to individual indexes for each book, there is a master index for the entire library. With the CD Bookshelf, you get a complete Perl library that you can easily carry with you anywhere you need it.

This is a must have bookshelf,  January 28 2009

I purchased this bookshelf several years ago and I'm still using it for everyday use and is the best investment I ever did in Perl programming.

Technically speaking this bookshelf includes all you need to learn and develope in Perl 5.x. Perl 5.10 is not covered by this bookshelf as it was printed back in 2002, but it is still valuable and usable under Perl 5.10 as far as Perl 5.10 lets you program the same way as you did with Perl 5.8 or 5.6.

Of course version 4 is there but IMHO it is less usefull, some books are missing on it and others are not available as HTML so you cannot use the global search facility of the bookshelf. This global search facility lets you look in any book of the bookshelf anytime and is one of the good things of this version.

"One advantage of this format is immediately apparent: a tremendous amount of shelf space is saved by using CDs. Just these two packages alone save about a foot and a half of precious space... Being able to search all the books at the same time is really handy if, like me, you often remember that there was a description of something you need, but you can?t remember what book you saw it in...As a supreme test of portability, I loaded both CD Bookshelf CDs onto the compact flash module in my Sharp Zaurus PDA...Being able to carry a complete 14 book technical reference library in your pocket, and use it with ease, is a real winner."

"An indispensable bookshelf. Trees are proud to die for these top titles! If there is one book you really need to keep handy--if you use Perl for a living--it's the 'Perl CD Bookshelf'. O'Reilly has a made a specialty out of Perl documentation...and this is a compendium of seven key texts on the language...its hard to exaggerate the value of this book too highly--'Perl in a Nutshell' is itself vital to a jobbing Perl Programmer, and the combination with six other core books provides a level of coverage that can't easily be equaled."--Charlie Stross, Linux Format, February 2003

Reviews From Previous Edition
"O'Reilly & Associates publishes most of the Perl canon, but that's a lot of weight to carry around. 'The Perl CD Bookshelf' puts six popular Perl titles at your disposal in one easy to carry CD. You get 'Learning Perl', 'Learning Perl on Win32,' 'Programming Perl,' 'Advanced Perl Programming,' 'The Perl Cookbook,' and 'Perl in a Nutshell' (also provided in hard-copy). It's just HTML, so it works on any platform and is searchable. Take the camel everywhere you go!"--The Perl Review

"A great example of what can be done on CD...you are sure to be impressed." --Major Kearney, PC Update August 2001

"Overall, well worth buying" --Andrew Roberts, Northants Linux Users Group, July 2001

"Perl for Systems Administration is a worthy addition to this library. The other four books have proven themselves to be worthy of being in every Perl programmer's library. Having them all in one convenient searchable spot is, of course, a huge advantage. The most portable way to get five Perl books from here to there." --Craig Maloney, slashdot.org, July 2001

"A powerhouse of Perl" --Anna Freeman and Steve Patient Amazon.co.uk DELIVERS Computer Programming, June 2001

"This review only needs four words--O'Reilly's Perl compendium is, without a doubt, The ultimate Perl resource." --Chris Russell, amazon.co.uk

"Instead of trying to create a single, massive volume that covered all aspects of the Perl language, they (O'Reilly) translated their most successful titles into a convenient, searchable HTML format and presented them all together on a single CD. An ultimate (and ultimately portable) Perl reference.. the five books in this collection normally retail for $189.75, which makes the $79.95 (or even cheaper if you shop around) CD Bookshelf quite a steal! Heavily hyperlinked, completely portable, viewable on any browser, and instantly searchable thanks to a master index and
Java search engine, I found this to be far more convenient than the print versions of the very same books for reference purposes. OVERALL RATING: 5/5" --Kevin Yank, webmasterbase.com, June 2001

"As with all O'Reilly books the entire concept is well thought out from beginning to end. You only have to mention the name O'Reilly and everyone understands what it means." --Richard Ibbotson, Sheffield Linux User's Group, February 2001
