Mac OS X: The Missing Manual by David Pogue Corrections made in the 2nd Printing (January 2002) 9 (Typo or formatting problem) The text used to read: The earliest versions of Mac OS numbered 10.0 through 10.4 It now reads: The earliest versions of Mac OS numbered 10.0 through 10.0.4 --------------- 9 (Update) The text used to read: Then came version 10.1.1, which offered no new features but improved the speed and behavior of USB and FireWire connections, printing, digital camera compatibility, CD burning, and so on. It now reads: Note: A series of minor, no-new-features updates followed, including 10.1.1 (improvements in USB and FireWire, printing, digital camera compatibility, CD burning, and so on) and 10.1.2 (better DVD playback, USB and FireWire compatibility, AppleScript and Apache versions, and so on). The Software Update feature (page xx) is designed to notify you automatically when they become available. --------------- 43 (Minor technical error) Update the Note to say: Note: Background colors and pictures are visible only in icon view. They disappear in list or column view, and in windows that belong to Mac OS X itself, such as the hard drive window and the Users folder. --------------- 67 (Update) The text used to read: As of Mac OS X 10.1.1, It now reads: As of Mac OS X 10.1.2, --------------- 87 (Typo or formatting problem) The text used to read: on the Dock in Mac OS X versions 10.4 and earlier.) It now reads: on the Dock in Mac OS X versions 10.0.4 and earlier.) --------------- {P. 236} TIP: Second sentence is erroneous, and should be changed to "If this shortcut conflicts with one of the programs you already use, you will need to either deactivate your extra keyboards or add a space before using the shortcut." Reason: There is no way to deactivate the Command-Space shortcut, which rotates between active SCRIPTS (like Roman and Chinese), and which takes precedence over the same shortcut in applications (a royal pain). The Command-Option-Space shortcut is additional, and rotates between KEYBOARDS within a script (like English and French). Note: The same error was made (and reported) on p. 203 of the OS 9 Missing Manual. AUTHOR: Fixed in 2nd printing (vi) missing 7 chapter after 4th paragraph; There is no chapter 7 in Table of Contents AUTHOR: Fixed in 2nd printing {P. 294} Note: Second sentence is erroneous and should read "Still, Key Caps is the only way to get an at-a-glance overview of every symbol you can make with different keystrokes." Reason: Fonts can contain thousands of symbols and Character Palette, not Key Caps, is the only way to access all of them. AUTHOR: Fixed in 2nd printing (P. 295) para 2: Add sentence at the end "For many fonts you will also need to change the keyboard to access more of the characters." Reason: If you leave the keyboard set to English, all keycaps can see are the first characters in a given font, which are almost always Roman. To see Hebrew letters in Hebrew fonts on Key Caps, you need to have the keyboard set to Hebrew, etc. AUTHOR: Fixed in 2nd printing 426 (Typo or formatting problem) The text used to read: as described on page 322. It now reads: as described on page 330. --------------- 554 (Typo or formatting problem) The text used to read: a program like Wipe Away It now reads: a program like Wipe Creator --------------- 573-583 (Typo or formatting problem) [minor indentation and capitalization problems corrected]
