Learning Red Hat Linux, 2nd Edition A Guide to Red Hat Linux for New Users By Bill McCarty The unconfirmed error reports are from readers. They have not yet been approved or disproved by the author or editor and represent solely the opinion of the reader. Here's a key to the markup: [page-number]: serious technical mistake {page-number}: minor technical mistake : important language/formatting problem (page-number): language change or minor formatting problem ?page-number?: reader question or request for clarification This page was updated February 06, 2003. UNCONFIRMED errors and comments from readers: (42) First line under "Create the / partition"; Currently reads: "To add the required Linux native partition with the mount point /, click Add to..." Should read: "To add the required Linux native partition with the mount point /, click New to..." The button displays as "New" rather than "Add." (76) First and second paragraphs under "Using virtual consoles"; First paragraph, second sentence under "Using virtual consoles" reads: "...type Ctrl-Alt-Fn..." Second paragraph, first sentence under "Using virtual consoles" reads: "...type Ctrl-Alt-F7." In both cases these are keystrokes rather than typed commands. The world "press" should replace "type." [100] 3rd paragraph; The author wrote, "you must be logged in as ROOT to shut down your system". Possibly that is true, for the "Custom" installation he recommends. I will try a "Custom" installation soon. However, it is NOT true of the "Workstation" installations I've done on 2 boxes on our home LAN. The Users of our "Workstation" installations can shut down the boxes, without knowing the ROOT password. (120) 2nd paragraph from Using man; To page forward, press the Space key; to page backward, press the B key. (B did not work, but b works.) To exit the man program, press the Q key. (Both Q and q work.) (184) Paragraph headed "Mozilla"; Second sentence reads "Figure 10-10 shows the same web page as the preceding figure ..." --- but the "preceding figure" would be 10-9, and that is _not_ a web page. [213] 2nd paragraph; service samba start should be service smb start (216) Middle of the page (paragraph 5 of 'Linux Client') COMMAND; The book says: The name of the SMB host should be preceded by two backward slashes and followed by one backward slash, for example.. smbclient \\server\myshare -U mccartyb It should read: The name of the SMB host should be preceded by two FORWARD slashes and followed by one FORWARD slash, for example... smbclient //server/myshare -U mccartyb [219] first paragraph; The DHCP service config file ( dhcpd.conf ) generates an error on starting stating that line 1 ( of the file). error " etc\dhcpd.conf line 1 expecting a parameter or declaration." (232) Caption for 12-5; The caption for figure 12-5 reads: "The Apache start page as viewed with Links" Should read: "The Apache start page as viewed with Lynx" [235] 3rd paragraph; I followed the instructions "To configure sendmail to accept connections from other hosts". The changes were accepted by the system but other hosts still can't get deliver their email. The only thing I haven't done is reboot. (283) Last sentence in Table C-2; For "vga=" the explanation contains the parenthetical note that "This argument is interpreted by lilo ..." --- which may or may not be true, but except for the entry in the glossary there is no information anywhere about "lilo" and since some references have been updated to refer to GRUB instead of LILO one wonders if this would be the case here also. (337) Line 4 ("LILO"); "LILO" refers to pages 22 and 324. Page 324 is the glossary entry for LILO, but page 22 refers to GRUB, not LILO. And, incidentally, there is no entry in the glossary for GRUB.
