The best book about java servlets ever., March 16 2006
This is the best book about java servlets ever. Just buy it, so you will learn how to program web applications with servlets, and you won't need EJBs any more.
But keep in mind that there are lots of errors in Jason Hunter's database connection pool sample.
An excellent but very dated resource, February 07 2005
This is an excellent book for first-time Java Servlet programmers, and is even a useful reference for experienced servlet programmers needing to refresh their memories.
It covers a broad range of material even if it lacks depth. I wish it had gone into more depth (detail) in many areas, but to fair, that might have made the book 50% larger.
My main complaint is that it is now 2 months shy of being 4 years old. 4 YEARS OLD! I generally don't buy books that are more than 2 years old. If this book weren't so useful, I would not recommend it. If you can wait until the next edition is published, I suggest that you do so (note: O'Reilly has not yet even indicated that another edition has been planned). If you can't wait, buy it -- you're still getting an very good book, but it covers the Java Servlet Spec. 2.2 and only covers "2.3 Draft" in a superficial way. It doesn't cover 2.4 at all! This book is in dire need of an update.
Servlet Spec. Release Dates:
2.2 Dec. 17, 1999
2.3 Nov. 25, 2001
2.4 Nov. 24, 2003
Java Servlet Programming, 2nd Edition Review, November 30 2003
I strongly disagree with the other reviews. i read this book cover to cover and found it really unhelpful.
This book is good if you want to understand servlets basics BUT it does not provide an example of a servlet it develops. I wouldl ike to see an edition where Mr Hunter has an ongoing shopping cart servlet so people can learn hands on.
After reading this book i have had to read Struts (Oreilly) for an example of a servlet.
My advice is : stay away from this book unless you want to know the technical aspcts of HTTP requests and servlets. Use the sun web services tutorial or find another source.

Java Servlet Programming, 2nd Edition Review, June 13 2001
Perhaps the best Servlet primer I have ever read.
The book is a Revised Version of the first edition rewritten to cover the latest Servlet API specification 2.2 as well as to introduce the major changes in the upcoming 2.3 draft spec.
The book begins with chapters covering the history of Servlets and a quick introduction to Web applications/HTTP that offers an insight into the world of Servlets for newbies. The following chapters quickly delve into core topics such as Servlet lifecycle, session tracking techniques, using JSPs with Servlets (there is a lot of emphasis on this in the book), Applet to Servlet communication and Servlet chaining and collaboration. Brief notes are scattered throughout the book that talks about changes in the 2.2 spec pertaining to specific contexts.
The book includes several supplementary chapters that focus on leveraging technologies such as JDBC, WAP/WML, SSL J2EE and Internationalization. These quick tutorials blend very well with the overall premise of the book and help paint a holistic picture of a typical Servlet application. I found the J2EE refresher and the section on Taglibs very informative and so much better than what many web sites has to offer.
The concluding chapters cover Servlets in action - many alternative Servlet frameworks such as Element Construction Set (ECS), XMLC, Tea, and WebMacro/Velocity that stand as evidence to the popularity and applicability of this great technology.
It is a must-have book. The exactitude, clarity and comprehensiveness makes it a worthy addition to any Java developers bookshelf.

"a solid introduction to the world of Java development with Servlets and related technologies. Thoroughly revised and newly updated with over a half-dozen new chapters, this title brings an already useful text up to speed with some leading-edge material. It excels particularly in explaining how to program dynamic Web content using Java Servlets, with a fine introduction to all the APIs, programming techniques, and tips you will need to be successful with this standard. Although Servlets are not the only game in town, they are still important tools for successful Web development. This updated edition shows you just how to do it with plenty of basic and advanced tips for taking full advantage of this powerful Java standard."
