Full Description

Java Examples in a Nutshell is full of real-world Java programming examples. The second edition of this bestselling book covers Java 1.3 and contains 164 complete, practical programs: over 17,900 lines of densely commented, professionally written Java code covering 20 distinct Java APIs, including Servlets, JavaServer Pages, XML, Swing, and Java 2D. David Flanagan, the author of Java in a Nutshell, has created an entire book of programs that readers can learn from and modify for their own use. This book is a companion volume to Java in a Nutshell, Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell, and Java Enterprise in a Nutshell. While those books are quick references at heart, they each include accelerated tutorials on various Java topics. Java Examples in a Nutshell picks up where those books leave off, serving up a suite of example programs for novice Java programmers and experts alike. This book doesn't hold readers' hands or supply detailed explanations of Java syntax or method calls; it simply delivers well-commented working examples for exploring the wide range of what's possible with Java. Each chapter concludes with programming exercises that suggest avenues for building further knowledge. Java Examples in a Nutshell contains the following:
  • Examples that demonstrate basic Java functionality and the essential Java API's, including I/O, threads, networking, security, reflection, serialization, and security.
  • Programs that use the graphical user interface and graphics features of Java, highlighting the Swing, Java 2D, printing, data transfer, JavaBeans, and applet APIs.
  • Examples that illustrate key enterprise APIs in Java, including remote method invocation (RMI), database connectivity (JDBC), servlets, JavaServer Pages (JSP), and XML.
  • An example index that lets users look up a programming concept or Java class and find any examples in the book that demonstrate that concept or use that class.

Java Examples in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition Review,  September 23 2002

What's up with the examples? OK, I've got an older book - so the ItemListener does not compile as shown in the book and there is nothing to help me know what would work. I down load you examples from the second book, but instead of using good, old, plain Java it uses Java Swing - but none of the GUI examples work!!!

What's up with? Can anyone explain how I can get to the item selected from a good-old, simple Choice item? Would that be expecting too much from a book of Java Examples?

Roger

Great book, if you are a beginner this will definitely clear that "magic" mist that surrounds some programs(you actually see how to write a program that does something useful-no more counting to ten programs). I have 3 of this authors books and have to say they all get used to the full. This book will allow experienced programmers to dabble in other areas for example graphics or servlets and will give you a taste for trying something new.

Great "jump in and try" book. I hate having to waffle through mountains of text to find a single simple solution. Used in combination with Java in a Nutshell, this book is a great programmers aid. I do, and will recomend this book without hesitation, to anyone wanting to code in java.

This book is very good at what it is designed for:

get the reader involved in real-life coding. The

topics covered are very relevant, such as jdbc, JSP,

XML, swing, and Graphics2D. The only reason I am not

giving it 5 stars is because Sun's online documentation

is better at explaining usage and options and provides

better and simpler examples.

Keep up the good work David!

I'm expecting this book to be of the same level and intensive as of the now classic and definitive

"Tiger" book "java in a nutshell"

Media reviews

"Whether you are new to Java or not, this book is sure to provide practical advice."--Ray Blackie, Calgary Oracle Users Group, April 3, 2002.

"It's hard not to like the Nutshell series from O'Reilly & Associates. It doesn't profess to do anything more than it tends to deliver: a clear concise reference for a given domain...Java Enterprise in a Nutshell is no different... it's a good book to have readily available while you're actually programming...a good investment for most Java programmers, modestly priced and well-formulated, providing much additional value" --Claude Duguay, Java Pro, April 2001

"an excellent book and a superb learning aid for Java programmers at any level." --Elizabeth Zinkann, Sys Admin, March 2001

"Java Examples in a Nutshell" makes a very slick follow up to O'Reilly's "Java in a Nutshell" tome. The examples in this book provide much more depth to those in the earlier Java book. David Flanagan believes that people learn best by example and we heartily agree. As a teaching tool this book serves well and covers a very impressive range of Java topics; from Java Basics to Graphical User Interfaces to Servlets and much more. With 150 examples and close to 18,000 lines of code we found the book a handy addition to our reference library." --Lee Hudspeth, The Naked PC, Nov 3, 2000

"Although I have been in the software industry for 16 years, this is probably the first note of this kind I've ever sent. I just wanted to say thanks for producing such high quality programming books (especially the Java series) at rational prices. It seems that the rest of the computer book industry is hell bent on a race to see who can gouge the highest prices for the cheapest trash. I've voted with my wallet since most of the titles that I buy these days are yours." --Donald J. Cunningham

"The best introductory route to Java I have come across. Thoroughly recommended and it's good to see that one of the publishing stalwarts of the early days of the Net is still doing all the right things." --Bill Poel, Computer Shopper UK, June 1998

"Another fine example of the O'Reilly style of writing...If you take the time to work through this book, you should come out with a very good understaning of Java, JavaBeans, Applets, Servlets, JSP and XML and its uses for Web Designing. As technology moves into the use of these, this would be a book you wouldn't want to miss. I rated this book as a "10" --Barbara Rhoades, St Louis Web Developers and Web Designers Organization January 2001

"an outstanding collection of code samples that are designed to help you improve your programming skills--by studying code that works. With over 150 expert examples that illustrate a wide range of Java APIs, this volume definitely can bring your knowledge of Java to the next level. This is a worthy and up-to-date resource for all levels of Java programmers." --Richard Dragan, amazon.com Delivers Computer Programming, Nov 2000

"Without a doubt, Java in a Nutshell is a valuable reference to any Java programmer's bookshelf." --David Reilly, javacoffeebreak.com

"it's like the rosetta stone between C++ and Java." --Al Williams, Web Techniques, Oct 2000
