"Nostalgia Corner: ... Snapping and Shaking"

In the box, "Nostalgia Corner: Turn off all the Snapping and Shaking," it should be noted that if you do select "Prevent windows from being automatically arranged..." Windows will also disable the awesome "Win + Up-arrow" and "Win + Down-arrow" shortcuts for maximizing and minimizing windows, especially since the author introduces these shortcuts only a few lines later. NB: if it is unclear in my field entries, I am looking at locations 4686 - 4703 in the Kindle book, purchased from Amazon.

Step three in instructions to disable Lock Screen

In the instructions to disable the Lock Screen on Kindle location 1251, step three designates the path "Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization" within gpedit.msc. However, there are two different "Administrative Templates" folders that can be selected: one under "Computer Configuration" and one under "User Configuration." This should be added to the path, as in: "Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates...."

Third printing May 2014. Able to access mmc, but Group Policy Editor not a listed snapin!
Tried to add only thing that appeared related, "Local Users and Gro...", but got error message saying this snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows 8.1. To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts control in the Control Panel."
Am using Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 laptop that came with Windows 8.0, and later took the free upgrade to 8.1. (Have its twin still running 8.0 -- that's my wife's.) Speccy data follows:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Computer type: Notebook
Installation Date: 7/8/2014 4:40:02 PM
Serial Number: Q7HFT-HFCY7-77YY8-3PHR3-G8XVT
And that's about all I can tell you. When I tried to run gpedit.msc, system said it couldn't find that puppy, and that's when I read the note in italics. Have screen shots of both related screens if you can handle pdf.

2nd paragraph

The "Tip" is incorrect. Windows does NOT ask if you would like to burn a system repair disk (CD or DVD). I searched the Web, and as far as I can tell, Windows 8.1 does not support system repair disk any more. The solution is to create a USB Recovery Drive. The book describes this well on page 723.

The procedure to access the secret shortcut menu under the Networks pane of the Charms bar does not appear to work in Win 8.1 Home Premium. The only pop-out that appears upon right clicking on the network name is an option to "Connect automatically" together with a check box.

If certain features are limited to functionality in specific editions of Windows 8, such as the use of the "Lusrmgr.msc" command on page 768 (also does not appear in Windows Home Premium), a note should be made.

Section on Windows Easy Transfer, mid-page 868 to end of 871

To put it kindly, the description of Windows Easy Transfer in this book is valid for Win8.0, but Easy Transfer no longer exists where Win8.1 is the originating-computer's system. And, where the _final_ system is Win8.1 it will only transfer the files (not the settings) from a computer running Win7, RT or 8.0, but from a computer running a still earlier version of Windows you are _completely_ out of luck, no files or settings can be transferred, and Microsoft gives warnings in bold print about using any third-party program to transfer files and settings. So text from the last half of pg. 868 to the end of pg. 871 of this book needs to be removed or considerably rewritten. (See http://www.infoworld.com/d/microsoft-windows/solving-the-mystery-of-windows-81s-missing-features-230702?page=0,0 and http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-performance/easy-transfer-tool-is-not-running-properly-under/cbc58c28-79e5-4201-9409-ad7719d617c6 .)
Microsoft is apparently pushing Skydrive (now, I am told, to be called OneDrive) as can be seem from one of the references.

Whole section.

The advice regarding Windows Easy Transfer is unhelpful to users wanting to move files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 8.1. The problem is best summed up in the following blog by J. Peter Bruzzese.

'It's probably not a tool you use every day, but it's a very handy way to copy files and settings from one Windows computer to another. With Windows 8.1, it works differently. Now, it only transfers files, not settings, and only those from Windows 8.0, Windows RT, and Windows 7 -- not from pre-7 editions of Windows or other Windows 8.1 computers. When I asked why the functionality was reduced, Microsoft told me, "WET is being deprecated now that many settings roam automatically and you can share data using SkyDrive.'
