Question 9. refers to "Run Charts" as being one of the Seven basic tools of quality. However on pages 425-427 where these seven tools are described, there is 1) no mention of run charts, 2) already seven basic tools mentioned which are not run charts (making 8).

One may imagine Control Charts to be synonomous with Run Charts, however the explanation listed in the answer here indicating that a run chart shows number of defects over time is quite different than the explanation given for control charts.

Answer to question 17

The answer to question 17 has got nothing to do with the question, it explains a completely different item. The question is about the project charter, the answer is about the project management system. In my opinion, the answer B is correct a stated, just the explanation is about something else.

Note from the Author or Editor:
The issue was that the old term for work authorization system was project management information system. The term had been updated in the question, but not the answer. Fixed in the July 14th printing.

2. Answer: A

The last sentence states that "the business case was created by the Develop Project Charter, which is part of the Initiating process group". This tells readers that the business case is an output, which is incorrect.

The business case is actually an INPUT into the Develop Project Charter process. Other inputs include the project SOW, agreements, EEFs, and OPAs. The only output of the Develop Project Charter process is the project charter.

The critical path is D-E-F-G, with a duration of 17.

1. answer, explanatory text

The correct answer for this question is A ("Determine Budget") which is also listed as the correct answer. However, in the text below the very same "Determine Budget" is discarded because "it uses the cost baseline and thus the cost baseline has to be created before". This is wrong! The cost baseline is actually the output of the "Determine Budget" process (see PMBOK guide) and not its input. Instead the incorrect answer C ("Estimate Costs") is not mentioned at all - something got probably mixed up here…

You say, that in week 5 you should have completed 5/8 of 4km, which is 2500m. This is only correct when we are at the END of week 5 (the work of week 5 has been completed). At the beginning of week 5, we should have completed 2km. So IN week 5, our PV is between $104,000 and $130,000.

At the beginning of week 5, the SPI is $93,600 / $104.000 = 0.9!

Please change the question to say, that we are at the END of week 5! This would be really helpful!

First tool/technique mentioned, but the error shows on *MANY* pages throughout the remaining book

The book mentions six different conflict resolution techniques, one of them being "confronting" (with the remark that this actually means "problem solving").

The major issue here: there are only five techniques (see PMBOK guide, section 9.4.2.3, page 283)! None of them is "confronting". Instead, the former "confronting" was meanwhile (some years ago…) merged with the separate "collaboration" item and is now named "collaboration/problem solving". There is no separate "collaborating" technique anymore, and the term "to confront" does not even show up in the PMBOK (fifth edition)!

This is probably due to a major oversight by the authors regarding the changes between the fourth and the fifth edition of the PMBOK guide. The horrible thing is that this mistake shows up everywhere in the remaining book. In many places, i.e., almost all question and exercises, sections referring to conflict resolution, etc., the outdated "confronting" shows up…

This is really confusing to the reader who simply learns incorrect things here! This is not helpful at all in preparing for the exam, and very embarrassing for a book which explicitly states that if covers the 5th edition of the PMBOK guide. Please fix this! Otherwise potential PMP candidates can only be advised to get a different book which at least avoids such a *massive* blunder.

Question 9, explanation

The text explaining the answer is wrong or at least misleading: for the 25 month period, the 3rd year has already started! So the 10.000 $/year for maintenance would end up in 30.000 $ if those costs are paid yearly.
In this case none of the answers would apply (renting is still cheaper also for answer D, 25 months)…

So I assume that these costs are distributed proportionally over the months. In this case they'd be 25/12*10000 $ = 20.833 $. This would give the correct answer D (buying is cheaper than renting now).

But just using the 20.000 $ figure, as it is done in the book, seems plain wrong.

The distance between question 5 and the dotted line (where to enter the answer of question 4) is too low, the line almost overlays the question. Also the questions 6–10 seem shifted upwards (whereas the first few questions and the right column look okay),

Question 14 Answer

Question 14 uses a TCPI formula of (EAC-EV)/(EAC-AC) for the calculation, but I've not seen this version of the formula anywhere else in all of my studying on this topic.

In fact, on page 385 of the book it says that the EAC based formula for TCPI is (BAC-EV)/(EAC-AC). Based on this formula, the answer is (75000-52500)/(80000-56000)=.9375, which corresponds to answer A.

Also, the answer given for Question 14, Answer B, of 1.18 doesn't compute. The formula as solved in the book is (80000-52500)/(80000-56000)=1.18 is incorrect. The correct math seems to be that that produces an answer of 1.1458.

Answer to question 5

You're using a rounded value of 0.94 instead of the correct 0.9375 (= 15/16) for the intermediate result (CPI). But then, in the next step, you're using this rounded value (with only 2 significant digits!) to calculcate values with 6 significant digits?

As a result, the given EAC (531.915 $ instead of theoretically 533.333 $) and ETC (131.915 $ instead of 133.333 $) are plain wrong!

This is mathematical nonsense. Guys, this is already the 3rd edition of the book! How can such a mistake still be contained? Please fix this, reading the proposed solution really hurts!

Proposed solution for question 14

The whole text and calculation is full of errors (though the answer "B" is given correctly);

• The result (approx. 1,18) was obviously computed with the BAC, not the EAC. Thus the second sentence ending with "[...], then you know enough" should end just there. The "to compute the EAC" part needs to be discarded, the explanation just doesn't make sense.

• Independent of this, the formula for TCPI is simply wrong. Even if the EAC were to used, it should read TCPI = (BAC-EV)/(EAC-AC). Using EAC in both numerator and denominator is incorrect, there is no such TCPI formula.

• The value of EAC ($80.000) is used then in the TCPI calculation (with the correct formula, see above), but the numerical result in this case would be 1.15. This is different from the 1.18 shown and the equation is mathematically wrong.

To achieve the 1.18 result, one has to use the BAC based TCPI formular and use $75.000 everywhere.

Answer to question 35

If asking for a thing like "teaming agreement", shouldn't that term be explained before? I can't remember reading about it in the book, and if were indeed mentioned there, it's at least not contained in the index…

Actually the term is not even included in the PMBOK guide, so I very much doubt that it makes sense to have a question on it in the book (it will no appear in the exam either).

Question 104

Several of the given figures do not fit together. For example: if BAC is $90,000 and EAC is $92,100, how can the difference VAC (VAC = BAC-EAC) be -$2,600? It should be -$2,100 then.
Or: if AC is $25,100 and ETC is $45,600, how can their sum EAC (as ETC = EAC-AC) be $92,100?

Something got totally mixed up here with the numbers in this example!

Hint on answer to question 89

There is no such thing as "Administer Contracts". Probably this is an outdated PMP term from earlier versions of the PMBOK guide? The correct term probably should be "Control Procurements" for this process…

Various throughout the book where it has the http://www.headfirstlabs.com/PMP link

I am using Kindle reader.

When the book asks the reader to create a question using the fill in the blank format there is a link to http:// www.headfirstlabs.com/PMP where "You can add your Head Libs answer, and see what Head Libs other project managers came up with! " . This link only takes you to the main page to order the book. I didn't see a forum of other questions created by other people using this book. Why put it in the book if it's not going to be there to use?
